Q: How does the broadcast work? top

Club 80s with DJ Lex is broadcast from the Live365.com servers. The music comes from DJ Lex's huge library of 12" vinyl and rare CDs.

In order to keep the broadcast fresh, a playlist of 16 hours (380 MB/160 songs) is uploaded through FTP every other day. This takes about 8 hours to do. It's a little obsessive, but we have to listen to the stream for 8 hours a day too. :-)

In general, you won't hear the same song/song version repeated for about 30 days. Keep in mind most commercial radio stations only rotate 180 songs per week.

When you hear the 30 second 'Club 80s Promo' for the broadcast, it usually represents the start of the playlist.

As of November 2002, the Club 80s library consists of 3000+ tracks. This equals over 300 hours of music.

Q: What is the criteria for selecting tracks? top

The main focus of the Club 80s format is an extended or remixed version of a new wave/modern 80s song.

The second category would be rare, hard-to-find, or obscure 80s tracks. Most of these are recorded from 12" vinyl singles which are then ditital restored. Many of these tracks were never released on CD, or to the general public.

The third category is covers of 80s songs. We refer to these as the "80s Uncovered" library. You'll probably never hear a 80s 'pop' artist (ie, Prince, Madonna, etc.) unless it's a cover of the song that fits the 'feel' of the broadcast. There are many tribute albums that fall into this category.

The majority of the New Wave Sound was from 1978-1992. The only songs you'll hear that go into 90-92 are the major artists that still carried the '80s sound' (i.e., Depeche Mode, Erasure, New Order, U2).

Q: What's the name of that song? Playlists? top

There is a playlist window which displays the current and last played tracks. This is only accessible through the live365.com website. If you're accessing the broadcast through a bookmark in your audio application, you'll never see this window. Try accessing the broadcast through the links at the top of this page.

It's been reported that you might have problems viewing the playlist if you're behind a firewall. Unfortunately, you'll be out of luck. This is something that is beyond our control.

There are currently over 3000+ songs in the Club 80s library. It grows by a few dozen tracks every week. To publish all the track listings would be quite time consuming, and at this point, not realistic.

The latest weekly additions to the playlist are posted here. You're always welcome to Email questions regarding track titles and artists.

Q: Why doesn't the "BUY" button work in the Playlist? top

Live365 (the broadcast service) tries to match the MP3 ID tags to a CD for purchase. The majority of the Club 80s tracks are no longer available or they were not released to the general public. You'd have to track them down at a specialty store. We recommend Modified Music in Salt Lake City (801) 355-1770. For extremely rare out-of-print items, try EIL.com in the UK.

Q: Do you have mix CDs available? top

Copyright laws are written to be very broad. It's illegal to duplicate an artist's work in any way, shape, or form.

In this age of MP3s, the internet, and P-2-P file sharing, a lot of people have quickly traded the artist rights by claiming personal rights. I believe in supporting artists and making sure they get their well deserved money for their work.

That being said, I also believe the club DJ is a performer. How can you buy a DJ's performance without buying the copywritten material? Quite the dilemma.
